Joachim Umlauf is the director of the Goethe-Institut in Bucharest, leading at the same time the German-Romanian network of cultural centers in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, after previously being in charge of the Goethe-Institut in Lyon, Marseille, Paris, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. He is a permanent member of the Duitslandinstitutut in Amsterdam and a professor of cultural management at various European universities, such as the Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris, the University of Lorraine (Metz) or the University of Bucharest. He has been the coordinator of various European programs funded by Erasmus + such as the European Academy of Participation. He also worked with a number of partners on the Heritage Contact Zone project, a program funded under the Year of Cultural Heritage and which focused on Europe’s neglected or disputed heritage. Joachim Umlauf is the author of articles on foreign policy from a cultural perspective. The latest book co-authored – Im Schatten der Versöhnung, deals with the German-French cultural relationship in Europe and was published in 2019 by Editura Steidl.
